Beefcake Rob
Rob stood in front of his bedroom mirror, tugging gently at the collar of his light blue, grid-patterned button-up. He’d slipped a crisp white undershirt underneath and paired them with well-fitted black pants. One hand hovered at his side, relaxed, while the other closed into a soft fist—an unconscious signal of the butterflies racing through his stomach. Today, he wasn’t just Rob; he was the embodiment of every choice he’d ever made.
He had an interview at a cutting-edge design studio, a chance to talk about more than portfolios and résumés. He wanted to pitch the idea that clothes could be conversation starters, tools to spark unexpected connections. His shirt’s neat grid lines hinted at structure, while the open collar promised a glimpse of something personal. He imagined the hiring manager noticing the pattern first, then the undershirt, then that slight tension in his fist—proof that he cared deeply.
Shirtless Hunk
On his way out, he paused to button the shirt’s middle. It felt symbolic, like sealing an agreement with himself: today, he would speak from the heart. The elevator ride down seemed endless, but once the doors opened to the lobby’s warm beige walls, he inhaled, squared his shoulders, and stepped forward.
Inside the studio, whiteboards were scrawled with color swatches and fabric swatches pinned like trophies. The panel of three regarded him expectantly. Rob began by smoothing one hand over his thigh, the other unfolding his notes. He spoke about how patterns could guide the eye and anchor a moment. He described layering as a metaphor for the layers in every person, hidden stories waiting to be revealed. His shirt was his opening slide, his real-life case study.
When he finished, the room held its breath. Then one of the designers smiled and said, “You wear your ideas.” Another nodded, “We’re hiring.” Relief washed over him in warm waves.
Later, he walked back into the afternoon sun, shirt still buttoned just right, hands finally at ease. In that simple ensemble, he’d found his voice—and maybe a new beginning.
