Every morning, without fail, Joe woke first. Not because he was an early riser by nature, but because Miso, their plump grey tabby, had perfected the art of the 6:45 a.m. wake-up call. She’d pad softly onto the bed, plant herself between Joe and Fernando, and begin her low, insistent purr — the kind that vibrated through the mattress.

Joe would smile, eyes still half-closed, and reach for Fernando’s hand under the covers. “She’s here,” he’d whisper, as though announcing the arrival of royalty.

Fernando, who always pretended to be annoyed, would groan dramatically before rolling over to face them both. “Fine,” he’d say, “but only because she’s cute.” His hair stuck up in every direction, and Joe thought he’d never seen anything more perfect.

Sunlight, Coffee, Whiskers

They’d shuffle into the kitchen together, Miso trotting ahead like a tiny general leading her troops. The kettle hissed, the coffee beans ground, and soon the air filled with the warm, nutty scent of their morning brew. Joe poured two mugs — Fernando’s with oat milk, his own black — while Fernando prepared Miso’s breakfast with the precision of a Michelin chef.

Then came their favorite part: the small round table by the window. They’d sit close, knees brushing, mugs warming their hands, Miso curled on the chair between them like a furry diplomat. Outside, the city was just waking — buses rumbling, neighbors shuffling past with paper cups, the bakery across the street pulling trays of bread from the oven.

They didn’t always talk. Sometimes they read, sometimes they planned the day, sometimes they just sat in comfortable silence, watching the light shift across the yellow walls. But every so often, Joe would catch Fernando looking at him over the rim of his mug, that quiet smile in his eyes, and he’d feel the same thing he’d felt the first morning they’d shared coffee together:

This is it. This is home.

And Miso, sensing the moment, would stretch luxuriously, as if to say, Yes, humans. You’re finally getting it.
